How to Store Dried Lavender

Proper storage is essential to preserving lavender’s fragrance, color, and usefulness. When dried and stored well, lavender can be enjoyed for many months, often much longer than expected.

Storing lavender is not complicated, but a few thoughtful choices make a significant difference in quality over time.

Start With Fully Dried Lavender

Lavender must be completely dry before storage. Buds should feel crisp, and stems should snap cleanly rather than bend. Any remaining moisture can affect fragrance and lead to deterioration.

If lavender has been bundled for drying, allow adequate airflow and time before moving it into storage.

Choose the Right Container

Lavender prefers to breathe slightly while remaining protected.

Good options include:

  • Glass jars with loose-fitting lids

  • Cloth bags or muslin sacks

  • Cardboard boxes lined with paper

Avoid airtight plastic containers, which can trap moisture and dull fragrance.

Store in the Right Environment

  • Keep lavender in a cool, dry place

  • Protect it from direct sunlight

  • Avoid areas with high humidity

Light and moisture are the greatest threats to stored lavender.

Handling Matters

Lavender holds its fragrance in delicate buds. Excessive handling releases oils too quickly and shortens the life of the scent. Handle gently and only when needed.

Refreshing Stored Lavender

Over time, fragrance may soften. To refresh:

  • Lightly rub buds between fingers

  • Gently squeeze bundles or sachets

This releases natural oils without damaging the plant material.

How Long Dried Lavender Lasts

When stored properly:

  • Fragrance remains strong for 6–12 months

  • Color may soften gradually

  • Uses remain effective well beyond a year

Lavender ages gracefully when cared for well.

A Note From the Farm

Lavender reflects the care given at every stage — from growing to drying to storage. Thoughtful storage allows the plant’s qualities to remain present long after harvest.
